As to your three-fold typology, I think it offers some help, but leaves some of us a trifle uncomfortable with the labels. How, for example, would you classify a "senior loyalist" like Alice von Hildebrand? Certainly, on the one hand, she would not deny that Benedict XVI is the authoritative successort of Peter and, thus, that the present Church is in valid apostolic succession from the commisioning of Christ. Just as certainly, on the other hand, she would not embrace the de facto liturgy and catechesis found in most suburban American Catholic parishes as having anything but the vaguest resemblence with the worship and doctrine of traditional Catholic orthodoxy. The "reform of the reform" is great as an ideal, but what Pope has seen to its implementation? That, I think, is the monkey's wrench that keeps clattering under the hood.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14300599.post-1145327872041861352006-04-17T21:37:00.000-05:002006-04-17T21:37:00.000-05:00Andrew:To answer that, allow me to cite Jaroslav P...Andrew:

To answer that, allow me to cite Jaroslav Pelikan's fine distinction: "Tradition is the living faith of the dead; traditionalism is the dead faith of the living."

I believe the continuants are the true adherents of tradition, and the faith of the rad-trads is a museum piece. That said, I am just as opposed to the progs, for whom development of doctrine entains negation of things long taught infallibly by the ordinary magisterium. I'm with the present pope. My only complaint about him is that he's not moving firmly and decisively enough on the internal front. In his approach to the wider world, I couldn't agree more with him.

Best,
MikeMike Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18100363229707213441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14300599.post-1145327487036720302006-04-17T21:31:00.000-05:002006-04-17T21:31:00.000-05:00And where do you stand?
