One of America's greatest scholars of Christian history and thought died last Saturday, May 13, at 82. His five-volume The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine provided the template for my study of that topic while in college and graduate school. And that series was only a small part of his opus. Directly or indirectly, he has affected countless souls, doubtless almost entirely for the good.I am told that his humility matched his erudition. May his prayers as a member of the Church Triumphant aid us in our quest for Christian unity.
